Connecting wall modes and boundary zonal flows in rotating Rayleigh-Bénard convection

نویسندگان

چکیده

Rotating thermal convection captures key properties of geophysical and astrophysical systems. By performing high-resolution direct numerical simulations we strongly connect the physics wall-localized states rotating with observations a boundary zonal flow where turbulent has strong localized structure similar properties. We show that as buoyancy increases at fixed rotation rate, spatial, temporal, heat-transport state change smoothly monotonically. Our results in finite containers geophysical/astrophysical phenomena much larger spatial scales.

Traveling waves in rotating Rayleigh-Bénard convection.

A combined analytical, numerical, and experimental study of the traveling-wave wall mode in rotating Rayleigh-Bénard convection is presented. No-slip top and bottom boundary conditions are used for the numerical computation of the linear stability, and the coefficients of the linear complex Ginzburg-Landau equation are then computed for various rotation rates. Numerical results for the no-slip ...

Scaling laws for rotating Rayleigh-Bénard convection.

Numerical simulations of large aspect ratio, three-dimensional rotating Rayleigh-Bénard convection for no-slip boundary conditions have been performed in both cylinders and periodic boxes. We have focused near the threshold for the supercritical bifurcation from the conducting state to a convecting state exhibiting domain chaos. A detailed analysis of these simulations has been carried out and ...

Linear and nonlinear instabilities in rotating cylindrical Rayleigh-Bénard convection.

Linear and nonlinear convection in a rotating annular cylinder, under experimental boundary conditions, heated from below and rotating about a vertical axis are investigated. In addition to the usual physical parameters such as the Rayleigh and Taylor number, an important geometric parameter, the ratio of the inner to outer radius, enters into the problem. For intermediate ratios, linear stabil...

Traveling waves in rotating Rayleigh-Bénard convection: analysis of modes and mean flow.

Numerical simulations of the Boussinesq equations with rotation for realistic no-slip boundary conditions and a finite annular domain are presented. These simulations reproduce traveling waves observed experimentally. Traveling waves are studied near threshold by using the complex Ginzburg-Landau equation (CGLE): a mode analysis enables the CGLE coefficients to be determined. The CGLE coefficie...

Heat-transport enhancement in rotating turbulent Rayleigh-Bénard convection.

We present new Nusselt-number (Nu) measurements for slowly rotating turbulent thermal convection in cylindrical samples with aspect ratio Γ=1.00 and provide a comprehensive correlation of all available data for that Γ. In the experiment compressed gasses (nitrogen and sulfur hexafluride) as well as the fluorocarbon C_{6}F_{14} (3M Fluorinert FC72) and isopropanol were used as the convecting flu...
